Economy Loses 140k Jobs in December, Trump’s Deficit vs Obama Increases

Nonfarm payroll jobs fell by 140,000 in December 2020, following increases of 653k in October and 256k in November. Following the December report, there are 142.6 million total nonfarm payroll jobs.

December was the 47th full month since President Trump took office. During that time, the total number of nonfarm payroll jobs has decreased by 2.1%, which is equivalent to an annualized decrease of 0.5%.

After 47 months in the Obama presidency, the total number of nonfarm payroll jobs had increased by 0.76%, or 0.2% on an annualized basis. Obama is leading Trump by 2.82% on this metric.

Trump was leading Obama on jobs performance prior to April 2020. However, the economy lost almost 21 million jobs in April, many of which were COVID-related.

The story is similar if we compare President Trump to former President George W. Bush. After 47 months in the Bush presidency, the total number of non-farm jobs had decreased by 0.06%. Bush is leading Trump by 2.01% on that metric.
